Fed statement at 2 pm after a third straight S&P 500 decline

The FOMC statement lands at 2 pm ET after the S&P 500's third straight loss. Micron fell 7% on record results; Intel's raise moved 121 million shares.

3 min read

An FOMC statement arrives at 2:00 pm ET into a market that has now fallen three sessions in a row, with the selling concentrated in high-multiple AI names rather than in anything the companies themselves reported. Futures were little changed heading in.

The pressure is coming from bonds, not from tech results

Tuesday was the S&P 500’s third straight losing day, and every macro headline points the same direction: rising long-dated Treasury yields squeezing the most expensive parts of the market. Reuters, Kiplinger and Investopedia all framed it as a yields story rather than a fundamentals story, and the sector damage fits — chips and high-multiple software led lower while defensives were bid. Today’s FOMC statement lands at 2:00 pm ET and is the one scheduled high-impact item on the calendar. Running alongside it is a quieter thread of AI-valuation scepticism from institutional voices — Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, ECB economists, BofA’s Raedler — but that is commentary, not news.

One note on the numbers below: the gainer and decliner moves reflect Tuesday’s session closes.

Micron and Intel: the same tape, three stories each

Micron fell 7.02% to $940.76 on 36.6 million shares — and it did so despite record quarterly revenue and profit growth, which is the signature of a multiple move rather than an earnings move. A lower-tier outlet simultaneously blames weakening memory demand and pricing, which sits directly against the record-revenue framing; separately, Netlist has filed new ITC and federal patent actions targeting Micron’s DDR5 RDIMM and MRDIMM products, single-sourced so far. Intel fell 6.58% to $96.685 on 121.2 million shares, the volume standout of the entire tape, after pricing an upsized offering of roughly 210.5 million shares at $95 — coverage from the same outlet describes the raise as $15 billion in one place and about $20 billion in another, so take neither as settled. The close was just above the $95 print. Alongside: Meta −4.45% to $543.67 as a federal trial brought by 29 states over social-media child safety opened in California federal court, Caterpillar −4.63%, Robinhood −4.90% to $91.53, and Arm −6.67%, AMD −4.27%, Applied Materials −3.92%, Block −4.11%, Reddit −3.80% moving with the group rather than on their own news.

The other side of the rotation

Three large-cap pharma names up more than 3% on a day the AI complex sold off is the cleanest rotation signal available: Eli Lilly +3.60% to $1,225.73, AbbVie +3.43%, Johnson & Johnson +3.33%. No trial readout, approval or guidance change accompanied any of them, so read it as flow. Spotify +4.83% to $516.28 led large-cap gainers, and Adobe +3.58% to $263.14 on news that BlackRock lifted its stake above 10%, roughly an $8.4 billion position — an ownership event, not an operating one. Adobe’s most recent quarter carried $5.96 EPS on $6.62 billion of revenue with FY2026 guidance of $24.35–$24.45. Also higher: Alibaba +2.76%, Salesforce +2.71%, Exxon +2.54%, Nike +2.48%, Netflix +2.30%.

Small caps and an east-west split

The unexplained end of the tape is unusually busy: Amylyx +63.74% to $35.11 on 23.6 million shares, and Weave Communications +31.59% on 48.8 million shares — the second-heaviest volume anywhere in the data, behind only Intel, and extraordinary for a $7 stock. Avita Medical +24.02%, Haemonetics +15.97% and UGI +11.03% on 12.0 million shares round out a list in which five of the top ten are healthcare or biotech. Overseas, Chinese humanoid-robot maker Unitree rose 542% on its Shanghai debut, per CNBC — AI enthusiasm running hot in one market on the same day AI names were sold in another.
